The troops are necessary to stop weapons being imported to the West Bank, claimed Benjamin Netanyahu.
But Palestinians say having Israeli troops control the borders of any future state undermines their sovereignty – and have proposed an international force be deployed instead.
‘The only force that can be relied on to defend the Jewish people is the Israeli Defence Force,’ said Mr Netanyahu.
The talks, which resumed this month after a two-year breakdown, are foundering after Israel’s threat to restart building work on more Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank, occupied by Israel’s military since 1967.
‘Not one Israeli soldier will be permitted to remain’ in a future Palestinian state, said spokesman Husam Zomlot.
