Resting Lions, Tanzania

[h=2]Resting Lions, Tanzania

This Month in Photo of the Day: Animal Pictures
I took this "once-in-a-lifetime" shot at Klein's Camp in the Serengeti, Tanzania. We came upon these lions at 7:17 in the morning. I scrambled for my two camera bodies (Nikon D4 and D3s and 200mm-400mm and 500mm) and got the shot! Exactly six minutes later the first lion got up and within another five minutes, three were sleeping and the other three had gone off into the bush! I have been taking wildlife photos for over 20 years, but this has got to be my special moment!

Cricket is the passion and preferred pastime of almost every Indian boy. Playing on their village pitch, these boys don't let scarcity of resources hold them back, improvising with an old tire for wickets and plank of wood for a bat.

Bondi Beach, Australia

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos
As I walked along Bondi Beach in Australia I came across this woman in red. I watched her as she fed the seagulls and enjoyed the calmness. When I finally had a chat with her she told me she was from England and has been living in Australia for two years. She told me that every day since she's lived there, she would go to the market and get the seagulls leftover food for free. When I asked her why she did it, she told me the seagulls can’t do it. They give her peace; she gives them food.

The dream of the night of summer. Many Japanese visualize the dead's soul, seeing the light of a firefly. It is charmed by the light of a firefly as if it was seeing the momentary dream.

We sat in our safari vehicle and watched as several family groups of elephants (about 150 individuals) crossed the Sand River in the Mala Mala Game Reserve. As the light got better, the scene became even more surreal.

An expanse of cabbage coral attached to the slope of a seamount near Raja Ampat provides shelter for crabs, shrimps, and other animals. Passing schools of fish may feed on these invertebrates as well as on plankton brought up by strong currents.

She looks sweet grooming her chick, but don't mess with mom's nest: Ural owls are aggressively territorial. "I've made an 'agreement' with the females that the price to band and measure one nestling is six hard punches on the head," says Finnish ornithologist Pertti Saurola.

The first beams of a June day spotlight a ridge of rusty volcanic rhyolite at Landmannalaugar, a hikers' favorite. The Haarbergs hiked up to an overlook after midnight; at dawn, around 3 a.m., the clouds gave them a tiny break. "Five minutes and it was over," says Orsolya.

Mangroves, Central America

SEPTEMBER 18, 2012

Mangroves, Central America

Photograph by Brian Skerry, National Geographic

This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature and Weather Photos

Mangroves contribute to the system by trapping reef-bound sediment, filtering out pollution, and serving as nursery for many reef fish and invertebrates. The arched roots of mangroves like these form gateways through which multitudes of juveniles swim toward adulthood on the reef.
