England's squad for March games as Gareth Southgate names his 25 and recalls Ivan Toney

Gareth Southgate has had some important decisions to make for England's tests against Brazil and Belgium with not long to go now until Euro 2024 in Germany

Ivan Toney has been recalled to the England squad for the first time since serving an eight month ban for breaching betting rules.

And it means the Brentford striker now has the chance to gatecrash the Three Lions squad for this summer's Euros in Germany. Toney won his one and only cap 12 months ago as a late substitute against Ukraine at Wembley.

But he was then sent into the footballing wilderness two months later, in May 2023, when banned for a raft of breaches of the FA's betting rules, leaving his hopes of making Euro 2024 in serious doubt.

Joe Gomez has also been recalled from the international wilderness, while Jarrad Branthwaite and Anthony Gordon have both been handed their first call ups to the senior squad.

But there are no places for Raheem Sterling or Kalvin Phillips.

Liverpool defender Gomez has been named in the Three Lions squad for the first time since October 2020, following a string of impressive club performances.

Gareth Southgate has kept close tabs on Gomez in recent weeks and knows his versatility across the back line could be useful.

And with Southgate having to deal with a host of defensive injuries, it means Gomez now has the chance to stake his claim for a place in the final squad for the Euros.

Branthwaite, 20, will be regarded as an outside bet, but the Everton defender will be delighted his performances this season have been recognised.

England host Brazil and Belgium in two high-profile friendlies at Wembley in the next 10 days.

This will be the last squad before Southgate names his final 23 for the tournament, which begins in June.

Which spells bad news for the likes of Sterling, Eric Dier and Kobbie Mainoo, who have all been ignored.

Jordan Henderson has been included along with Cole Palmer, but there is no place for Rico Lewis.

Southgate has left out Sterling and Dier, while rising Manchester United star Mainoo is expected to be promoted to the England U21s, instead of being handed his first senior call up.

Chelsea star Sterling has won 82 caps and been involved in England's last five major tournaments.

But the 29-year-old now looks set to miss his first one since the 2014 World Cup.

Phillips, meanwhile, still has an outside chance, but would somehow have to rediscover his best form and truly on injuries to other midfielders.

Phillips was England's player of the year in 2022, but his career nosedived following a £50m move to Manchester City and he joined West Ham on-loan in January, where he has also struggled to secure regular starts.

Southgate has continued to select Phillips, despite his problems, but has now run out of patience with the 28-year-old.

The squad will meet up at St George's Park next week.
