Liverpool star Nunez has had a slow start in the Prem compared to the sizzling hot City striker Haaland and the Norwegian's form hasn't done the Reds attacker's confidence any favours

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been negatively impacted by Manchester City attacking counterpart Erling Haaland's flying start in the Premier League, according to ex-Reds star Jose Enrique.

Nunez and Haaland arrived in the Premier League for their respective sides this summer and were both tipped for big things in the division. Liverpool splashed £85m on Nunez who was brought in to replace Sadio Mane after his move to Bayern Munich.

But Nunez has had a horror start to his Liverpool career with critics writing him off as the worst buy of the season thus far. The Uruguayan has only managed to score twice in eight appearances leading reds fans to label him the biggest scam in football.

To make matters worse, the 23-year-old admitted that he doesn't understand a word that boss Jurgen Klopp says in his team talks before games. Meanwhile, things couldn't be any more different for Haaland, who cost City much less than Nunez at £51m, in Manchester.

The Norwegian has taken the Prem by storm and has already scored 14 goals in just eight games in the division. He's also broken a Prem record by scoring three successive hat-tricks - a feat that no player has achieved before.

And Haaland's success at the Etihad is doing Nunez's confidence no favours, Enrique reckons. But Liverpool haven't got time for him to find his feet if they want to challenge for trophies this season, which is why the former defender thinks Klopp should replace him with Roberto Firminho or Diogo Jota.

Speaking to Lord Ping, Enrique said: "It’s a difficult situation for Nunez and the price tag that Liverpool paid for him and the price tag that City paid for Haaland. Haaland is flying, he’s not. It’s definitely affecting him mentally. It’s not helping him get into form.

"The team performance doesn’t help and under Klopp, Liverpool always play with a false nine and he’s a proper number nine. Liverpool needs to adapt to him as well.

"It’s a worrying thing but Liverpool want to fight for everything and the player you signed to replace Mane isn’t playing. Firmino and Jota should be playing ahead of him at the moment."
