Arsenal have started 2024 in impeccable fashion and thrashed bitter rivals Newcastle United 4-1 to go within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool in the title race

Arsenal trounced Newcastle United 4-1 to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Having lost 1-0 to the Magpies earlier in the season, Eddie Howe's side represented a credible threat to Mikel Arteta's side's perfect start to 2024 in the league. However, the Gunners sapped the Toon's energy in the first half as a scrappy own goal from Sven Botman and Kai Havertz's fine team goal gave them a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Newcastle threatened in the second half, but Bukayo Saka's individual strike and a first Gunners' goal from Jakub Kiwior ensured the result was a dominant one. On a glorious day for Arsenal, one of their former Gunners, Joe Willock, got the last word by scoring a late consolation for Newcastle - Daily Star Sport considers what Arteta got right.

If it is not broke, do not fix it. Arteta's side have enjoyed a perfect 2024 in the Premier League, winning all six of matches of the new year.

Coming up against a side who has already beaten them this season, it would be easy for Arteta to second guess himself by trying to alter his style against the dangerous Magpies. However, he trusted his side's technical and physical abilities and his reward was a truly dominant performance.

Their title rivals should be taking the Gunners seriously again.

Arsenal dominated the middle of the park and they owe that down to Arteta's decision to deploy 'Riceinho'. Okay, that may not catch on, but the partnership of Declan Rice and Jorginho looks to be an inspired decision from the Gunners' boss.

The former Chelsea midfielder's deployment as the deep lying midfielder allowed him time and space on the ball, while Rice was able to maraud forward and win the ball up the pitch. If the ex-West Ham skipper didn't win the ball back, Jorginho was there to clear up.

It may not have been Plan A at the start of the season, but Arteta has an extremely balanced midfield partnership

He may not be a winger, striker, centre-forward or a midfielder, but Kai Havertz is proving to be vital for Arsenal. Havertz notched his sixth Premier League goal of the season to double the Gunners' advantage at half-time.

While he was deployed at the tip of Arsenal's attack, the ex-Chelsea ace had the freedom of North London to roam, link-up with his team-mates and make a late run into the penalty area. Sometimes, it has seemed like Havertz's managers have not known what to do with him.

There may be doubts about his ideal position, but Arteta looks like he finally understands what the silky German needs to produce his best football.

After a dreadful first half, Howe's side emerged from the dressing room with purpose, intensity and an eye on getting back into the contest. Arsenal were brilliant in the first half, but 2-0 is a famously dangerous lead to have.

Recognising the much improved Newcastle were threatening, Arteta seemingly encouraged his side to link up and try to fill the spaces in their backline. After 20 minutes of Newcastle pressure, Arsenal's counterattack caught the Magpies out, leading to Saka's goal.

There is a new solidity and sense of experience in this Arsenal team. Make no mistake, they are real title contenders.
