Jurgen Klopp has been charged with improper conduct by The FA after screaming in linesman Gary Beswick's face from inches away during Liverpool's tetchy 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been charged by The FA with improper conduct for screaming in a linesman's face against Manchester City.

Klopp lost his cool in a big way during Liverpool's 1-0 win over City at Anfield on Sunday. The German manager saw red after Bernardo Silva got away with pulling on Mohamed Salah's shirt in the second half.

Referee Anthony Taylor and linesman Gary Beswick did not deem the incident to be worthy of a free-kick, infuriating Salah and Klopp on the touchline. The 55-year-old marched up to Beswick as he was patrolling the line at Anfield and launched into a verbal tirade just inches from the official's face.

Taylor took a dim view of the incident, immediately giving Klopp a red card. The former Borussia Dortmund manager wasn't pleased but accepted his punishment and duly went off down the tunnel.

Klopp has until Friday to respond to the charge, but will not face a touchline ban in the meantime, meaning he will be able to manage his Liverpool team against West Ham at Anfield in their Premier League clash on Wednesday evening (7.30pm).

An FA spokesperson said: “Jurgen Klopp has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following the Premier League game between Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC on Sunday [16/10/22].

“It is alleged that the Liverpool FC manager’s behaviour during the 86th minute of this game was improper, and he has until Friday [21/10/22] to provide a response.”

After the City game, Klopp admitted he might have overstepped the mark but claimed that the linesman was "not bothered" by the apparent foul on Salah.

He said: "In the end, probably deserved, but you cannot have this situation. It is the clearest foul I ever saw in front of the linesman and he is not bothered. It is clear. They just watch the game but we [the managers] are involved."

Klopp's antics on the touchline attracted criticism from Ref Support UK, a charity which offers support to grassroots referee who find themselves on the end of abuse.

Ref Support UK CEO Martin Cassidy said: "When you see world recognised figures like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola behaving like that, it is then replicated by people in youth football and perpetuates the idea that it is OK to do it."
