Seven things we learned about Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 plans as England lose to Brazil

England were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in the first of their Euro 2024 warm-up matches. Here, Daily Star Sport looks at seven things that might give us an insight into Gareth Southgate's plans for the summer.

England have started their Euro 2024 prep with a whimper after losing to an under-strength Brazil side at Wembley.

Teenage sensation Endrick, who will join Real Madrid when he turns 18 in July, grabbed the winner with a few minutes to go, tapping home into an empty net after Jordan Pickford parried Vinicius Jr's effort. The Three Lions were without Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, but Brazil were missing the likes of Neymar, Casemiro, Alisson, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

With just a few games to go before England's Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, tonight's match offered a window in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 plans. Here's what we noticed:

It looks like Jude Bellingham will be used in an advanced midfield role, rather than as a classic centre mid. That shouldn't come as a shock - the Real Madrid man has been scoring goals for fun in Spain playing as a kind of shadow striker in Carlo Ancelotti's side.

On tonight's evidence, Southgate will try and deploy him in a similar manner - ahead of the midfield pivot but behind the No. 9. Getting the best of out Bellingham could be the difference between triumph and heartache out in Germany, and England's 4-2-3-1 formation lends itself to doing exactly that.

Southgate's loyalty to Harry Maguire is well documented, though many England fans have been wondering whether the struggling Manchester United man might lose his place in the side given the number of young, talented centre backs now on offer.

But it doesn't look as if Gareth has any plans to deviate from his tried and tested Maguire-Stones centre back partnership. Big Harry started tonight, and although it wasn't the most convincing of performances, he'll evidently have to do a lot worse to get pushed to the sidelines.

England have some unbelievable quality in their squad, but finding the right balance - particularly in midfield - could prove quite a test. Bellingham and Declan Rice are shoo-ins to start every game at the Euros, but who's going to partner those two in the centre?

Well, on tonight's evidence, it could be Conor Gallagher. The Chelsea ace divides opinion, but he might just be the man to give England some much-needed balance in the centre. His tireless energy and versatility make him a useful tool for any manager, so don't be too shocked to see him partnering Rice and Bellingham in Germany. Kobbie Mainoo might have a say in the matter, mind.

Walker will take some budging

England's talent pool is absolutely stacked, but arguably the most competitive position is right-back. When everyone's fit, Southgate will have Kyle Walker, Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier to pick from, though if tonight's game is anything to go by, Walker is the man to beat.

The Manchester City ace was hauled off injured after 20 minutes, but the fact he was given the captaincy suggests Southgate considers him one of the first names on the team-sheet. Barring an ill-timed injury, expect Walker to keep his place on the right-hand side.

Rashford on the outs?

It looks like Marcus Rashford has a heck of a job on his hands to get back into Southgate's England team. The Red Devils forward had to settle for a 15-minute cameo, and watched on as positional rivals Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen both got more considerable run-outs.

Rashford has been in poor form all season and is under serious threat of being left out of England's Euros squad altogether. A big couple of months ahead for him.

Chil didn't do so well

Injuries to Luke Shaw and Kieran Trippier have opened the door for Ben Chilwell who despite his success with Chelsea has never really won Southgate's trust. The left-back was disappointing tonight, and arguably fluffed one of few auditions he'll get to make a case to be first choice at the Euros.

He'll need to step things up in the coming days and weeks, starting with Tuesday's clash with Belgium. Otherwise, Southgate will have no choice but to reinstate Shaw - who is due back from injury before the tournament.

Ollie over Ivan

In the absence of Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins was given the nod up front over Ivan Toney. Granted, the Aston Villa man has played a lot more football than Toney in the past few months, but his selection offers a little window into Southgate's centre forward pecking order.

Should Kane get injured or suspended during the Euros, Watkins, who played 90 minutes this evening, appears to be his most likely stand-in. And why not? He's in the form of his life at the moment.
