Today we have released more information about a project of Canonical really interesting that not much was known. The idea is simple, converting a terminal at two different things depending on where you are using. Thus, a smartphone would be an Android phone as we know it when we are using it in his hand, but would immediately become a computer running Ubuntu to connect to a special dock that could be connected in turn to any screen.

This project is currently being carried out by Canonical, the company which depends on Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distribution for PCs, and bring us one step further in the functioning of smartphones, making them real dual devices.

Thanks to Ubuntu for Android might have from our complete mobile desktop experience, not simulated, which would come with sfotware office automation, web browser, email and multimedia applications, all from a terminal connected to a dock Android with a screen and keyboard . There is a transition going from Android bother to Ubuntu, and everything works without breaks, is immediate, so we just need to connect your Android to dock and become an Ubuntu desktop.

Once the terminal acts as Ubuntu desktop can use it as a normal desktop PC with multi-window browser and desktop multifunction not notice any difference.

In addition we would have a total unification, without synchronization, as the mobile and the computer are the same device. Thus our Android contacts are on our Ubuntu PC, allowing access to their Facebook or Twitter, the schedule is the same, so all the changes we see in one another, and so does SMS and calls, we can read and reply to messages or answer and make calls directly from your desktop.

Something very interesting is the integrated settings, which allow any adjustments we make to one of the terminal modes are in the other mode. Thus, the alarm clock settings bluetooth or WiFi passwords must be performed only once, and I repeat now the phone and computer are the same terminal. The same goes for all credentials and permits, for example, social networks. We put on Android and when we connect the dock are terléfono to Ubuntu.

Of course the multimedia section is of key importance here, since all the photos and videos are now accessible from any screen with a simple dock. In fact with this dock can take your computer anywhere as if it were a mobile phone, and teach our photos and videos anywhere. The mobility is impaired.

Since the Android phones started coming to market with dual-core and started talking about the quad-core has been much criticized in a mobile terminal do not need much. Ubuntu Android gives a reason for manufacturers to start making terminals more powerful, since not only are doing a smartphone, are making a desktop computer. In fact this style platform would give far more meaning in their terminals as powerful as they are beginning to see in the market. 4-core processors with more than 1.5 GHz and 1GB of RAM are enough to move a version of Ubuntu that does not require an extreme use of desktop. Honestly, the idea seems wonderful.

There are in fact minimum terminal characteristics to integrate Ubuntu to Android:
Dual-core processor at 1GHz
Video acceleration by driver in the kernel with Open GL association or ES / EGL
2GB of free space for the image
HDMI video output
USB Host Mode
512 MB of RAM

Convert handsets on desktop PCs is a great idea that combines mobility and versatility. In fact, doing so by Android handsets could be looking at the first opportunity of popularizing free software desktop. With a market share of 50%, Android has a huge presence, and if some of these terminals also function as a desktop PC using just a dock, the possibilities are enormous. Well focused on the public is very easy to sell, because it really is very good idea. It could be a great moment for Ubuntu and free software. I do not mean that now is not famous, much less to say that is not good, but having as a companion Android sponsor would secure a turning point.

A few days ago we talked about the full synchronization between Android and Chrome, a very outstanding by Google's mobile operating system. This would go a step further, since we are talking about a total and perfect synchronization. In fact be forgotten the concept of synchronization, since here not exist as such, but to be directly the same device for two different uses we have everything to each other. Agree that they are different operating systems, but are integrated and share everything. Wonderful, let's go.

And when will all this real? Now at CES we saw signs of what could be in running tests on a Motorola Atrix 2, but is more of a simulation to demonstrate the concept that a real sample. For now Canonical has put the spotlight on manufacturers, not users or developers, and will they be the ones to believe in the project and decide to take it forward. Fortunately is free software, so one way or another should eventually see the light. In any case, it is a fantastic idea, and somehow I doubt that will become a reality, although this has served only as a concept, but since there are already things developed and Canonical says it is prepared to support terminal-based X86 I think will succeed.

Anyway, going to demonstrations next week at Mobile World Congress, where we will tell you everything and teach you to live how it works.
