Man DEAD after police 'shoot through car window 10 times' on M5 motorway



A MAN is dead after a witness said police shot through a car window 10 times on the M5 motorway.

The A369 Portbury Hundred in Somerset is closed off following the incident and police have confirmed a man has died.

A witness, David Ellison, told BBC he told saw up to 10 shots fire through a car window.

He said: "As I came out of Portishead, police were ahead of me."

He added: "They surrounded it. They shot maybe five, six or ten times. Then they dragged a man from the car to resuscitate him.

"It came off the roundabout towards Portishead and then was boxed in by cars. They shot through the passenger window.

"There were one or two marked cars and two more unmarked vehicles."

Another witness said the shooting came after police chased a red car off of the M5 and down The Portbury Hundred.

Police said in a statement: "We can confirm a man died earlier this morning in an incident involving police firearms on The Portbury Hundred (A369) in Portishead.

"We have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

"This has been a fast moving incident and is now under investigation by the IPCC."

Residents said they heard "loud bangs" and "gunfire" at around 10am.

Avon and Somerset Police said on Facebook: "The A369 is closed near to J19 due to a police incident. Updates to follow when available.
