Liverpool are preparing a medical for Darwin Nunez in Madrid on Monday - after the Reds have reportedly agreed a £64million fee with Benfica for the young star

Darwin Nunez looks set to join Liverpool - pending a medical - after the Reds have agreed a deal for the Uruguayan with Benfica.

According to The Times, Liverpool will pay an initial €75million (£64million) for Nunez. And a further £12.8million could be paid based on appearances, while Benfica could pocket another £8.5million depending on Liverpool's success with Nunez in their ranks.

Nunez wasn't part of the Uruguayan side for their friendly with Panama on Saturday, he was instead in Madrid. Nunez will remain in Madrid as Liverpool start their medical test with him on Monday - and they could run until Wednesday.

Julian Ward, Liverpool’s director of football, has been in Portugal over the weekend to negotiate the deal.

Benfica had been asking for €80million (£68million) for the striker, while Liverpool were hoping to land their man for the £60million mark. After lengthy discussions, the two sides appear to have met in the middle with the initial £64million fee.

Almeria will also be due a small windfall after negotiating a 20 per cent sell-on fee with Benfica when he left them in 2020.

Nunez had attracted interest from across Europe: most notably from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid.

However, there was only one destination on the mind of the Uruguayan due to him reportedly considering Jurgen Klopp as “the best coach in the world." Nunez was further convinced to move to Anfield by Klopp and Virgil van Dijk, who spoke with him during the Champions League.

Nunez found the net twice against Liverpool when the two sides met in the quarter-finals last month.

Nunez has been in red hot form in the Liga Portugal - netting 26 times in 28 games this season.

And he's been just as potent in Europe, notching six times in 10 Champions League appearances.
