Chaotic scenes have been spotted at Hamburg Airport in Germany after a man rammed his car through the gate with two children inside, and has launched Molotov Cocktails onto the runway tarmac

An airport has been locked down after an armed man rammed through the gates in a car, in what police are calling a "custody dispute".

The armed man was originally believed to have taken two children hostage with him, but police later confirmed that it was only one, aged four, taken to Hamburg Airport, Germany. According to local news outlets, the man's wife had called police to report the possible abduction earlier this evening.

Federal police said an armed man had broken through a gate with his vehicle and fired twice into the air with a weapon. Police also said that the man's wife had previously contacted them about a possible child being with him, and officers claimed it was a "custody dispute".

A spokesman for Hamburg Police posted on Twitter/X: "There is currently a major police operation on the tarmac at @HamburgAirport. We are on site with a large contingent of emergency services. We are currently assuming a static hostage situation."

And when asked what it meant by "static", the spokesman replied that it is "currently unchanged in one place". Shortly after, Hamburg Police's SWAT team was brought in to assist with the situation.

According to German news outlet BILD, the person was driving in front of Terminal One in an Audi and had no license plate, and is now located on the "business aviation terminal", having parked "under a scheduled airliner".

All passengers at the airport were reportedly left stranded, with some stuck inside planes while the situation unfolded around them.

Federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert told news agency dpa that a large number of officers from state and federal police were on site and in the vicinity of the vehicle. Footage from the scene shows that the man also set small fires around the airport runways, with all flights to and from the airport stopped immediately.

The fires on the tarmac are thought to have been caused by "a kind of Molotov cocktail", Mr Gerbert stated, and had been quickly put out by fire crews on the ground.

Police and special forces quickly swarmed the area as soon as the man drove into the security fencing, with a perimeter now set up around it. A standoff with the man, and the child, is now said to be taking place.

A spokesman for Hamburg Airport said: "Due to a federal police measure, take-offs and landings are currently not possible." It later went on to clarify that no flights would leave at all for the rest of the night, telling anyone impacted by it to contact their airlines.

The Radisson Blue Hotel at the airport was also evacuated, but it is unclear whether or not that was connected to the situation.
