Arsenal 'in talks' to sign wonderkid as Mikel Arteta eyes new record transfer
Arsenal are in talks to sign Greek wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas from Belgian side Genk, in a deal that would smash the Greek transfer record
Arsenal are in talks to sign Greek wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas, according to reports.
Karetsas, 17, is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in European football and has been on the Gunners' radar for months. According to reports in his homeland, the midfielder won't come cheap, with a €45m (£38m) price tag on his head.
Karetsas currently turns out in the Belgian Pro League for Genk, but earned huge plaudits during his performance for Greece in their 3-0 win over Scotland in Glasgow earlier this year. He scored at the age of 17 years, 4 months and 4 days old, making him the youngest scorer in Greece's history as well as Nation League's history.
The Gunners' new sporting director Andrea Berta has been instrumental in progressing talks and Arsenal already enjoy a strong working relationship with Karetsas' agent - who oversaw his other client, Albert Sambi Lokonga, move to north London in 2021.
According to the Athenian-Macedonian news agency, Arsenal want to complete the deal this summer, but would allow the youngster to remain on loan at Genk for the 2025/26 campaign.
If the deal makes it across the line, the youngster would smash the Greek transfer record, beating the €36m Napoli paid Roma for Kostas Manolas in 2019.
Football Talent Scout have heaped praise on the young man, raving about his playing style and adding he had "excellent technique on the ball, mobility, short-dribbling, and good short-mid through passing ability".
It's that technique that has drawn comparisons to Arsenal's current playmaker-in-chief Martin Odegaard and Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki.
It has been a busy 24 hours for the Gunners, who confirmed 17 players would be leaving the club when they published their release list on Wednesday afternoon.
The Gunners have also been in hot pursuit of a new No.9, with both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko emerging as the two tops targets in north London.
Gyokeres was asked if he was joining Arsenal by Norway team-mate Leo Ostigard. Ostigard asked: "Where are you going in the summer transfer window? Can you give us a hint? Is it Arsenal? What are the alternatives?"
To which the striker said: "We will see. Nobody knows anything yet. I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now."
