Brit, 23, facing death after trying to 'smuggle 9kg of meth out of Thailand'
George Wilson allegedly told police he received the package from a British drugs runner called 'snoopy' and was paid just £460 to carry the narcotics to another country
A British tourist who is alleged to have tried to smuggle a suitcase full of meth out of the Thailand is facing the death penalty. George Wilson, of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was found with 9.15kg of the amphetamine in a Bangkok hotel room on Monday evening, local police claimed.
The 23-year-old was said to have collected the significant quantity of drugs from another Briton in the red-light area of Thailand capital. However, cops swooped on Wilson at Le Fenix on Sukhumvit Soi 11 after being tipped off.
In footage of the arrest, the young Brit is heard saying he has been in Thailand for "two weeks". When asked what was in the bag, he says, "I don't know".
Officers open the bag to find tightly packed parcels. One is ripped open and the substance inside is quickly put through a chemical test to see if it is meth.
Wilson is due to appear in a Thai court on October 1 and is being held in custody until then.
Lieutenant Colonel Noppha Thongbo said: "The suspect's full name is George Henry Allaway Wilson, born on 29 July, 2002, from High Wycombe.
"He was arrested on September 29 at 6pm. He is currently in police custody and will be taken to the Bangkok South Criminal Court tomorrow for detention in prison."
Wilson allegedly told police he received the package from a British drugs runner called "snoopy". He told police he was paid £460 to carry the narcotics through Thailand's Suvarnabhumi International Airport and onto the destination country, where another gang members was due to meet him.
Colonel Siranawitcha Intorn said: "George Wilson has been charged with distributing Category 1 narcotics, specifically methamphetamine or ice, with intent to sell in violation of the law, which constitutes a commercial act that contributes to the spread of the drug among the public.
"We believe he was part of a cross-border drug smuggling network, which is very serious. The amount of drugs seized was also very large. The highest levels of the Royal Thai Police have coordinated to make the arrest."
Lieutenant Colonel Pongtanin said: "I spoke English with the suspect. He confirmed that the items were his. The charges were explained to him along with his rights and he was handcuffed and taken into custody for legal processing."
