EasyJet passenger dies on Lanzarote flight as plane crew issues distress signal
The passenger tragically died mid-air and the plane was forced to issue a distress signal. The airline has said its crew did 'everything they could to assist' during the medical emergency
A passenger has tragically died aboard an easyJet flight bound for Lanzarote. Cabin crew did everything possible to help during the medical emergency, according to the airline.
A distress call was made following the carrier's standard protocols. The incident took place on Tuesday, easyJet confirmed to Le Parisien. The flight involved was travelling from Nantes in France to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, reports the Mirror.
French media reports indicate the incident happened on flight EJU4775. The captain issued a distress call before "making a routine landing in accordance with standard procedures". The airline told Le Parisien: "Our crews are trained to respond to medical emergencies and did everything they could during the flight.
"Our thoughts are with the passenger's family and friends, and we offer them our full support and assistance at this difficult time. The wellbeing and safety of our passengers and crew are always easyJet's top priority."
Ouest-France reported the incident caused significant delays for the return flight from Lanzarote to Nantes.
The return service, which was due to touch down at 2.45pm in Nantes, finally arrived at approximately 11pm.
It comes after the dad of a man who died as he flew home from holiday with his children paid tribute to his 'bubbly' son who 'lived life to the full.'
Chris Neill, 40, was travelling with his sons Reece, 20, and Archie, nine, when he fell ill on the Jet2 flight from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Burgas on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Cologne, Germany, where it is believed Chris suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed as he disembarked the plane. Off-duty paramedic Rachel-Victoria Leyland attempted to save Chris's life during the flight, but sadly he passed away.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Chris's parents, Mal and Lesley, set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for their son's repatriation.
On the anniversary of his son's death, Mal spoke to the ECHO about how the surplus money raised, which wasn't used for the repatriation costing around £15,000, has been put into a trust fund for Reece and Archie after nearly £24,000 was collected.
Mal travelled to Germany the day after the incident to bring Reece and Archie back home to the UK, while he stayed behind in Cologne to liaise with the coroner, reports the Liverpool Echo.
A week after Chris's death last year, Mal revealed to the ECHO that his son believed he had travel insurance through his bank, Halifax, but it had actually expired.
