EXCLUSIVE: The worst winter washout for 134 years brought 'biblical' flooding to Nottinghamshire - now Brits are bracing themselves for the big freeze as temperatures plummet

Plunging temperatures are set to freeze over water-logged Britain, causing more mayhem.

As parts of the country remain underwater, weather experts have warned treacherous ice is now on the way. They say a -10C ‘Beast from the East’ January big chill will cause the floods around the country to freeze.

The worst winter washout for 134 years saw parts submerged again today, with "biblical" flooding in Nottinghamshire. Now sodden ground and roads will turn icy as easterly air arrives from Sunday – as shown on a weather map.

Scattered snow flurries are also possible from Sunday night in the South. Netweather said: “After the floods, next up is frost, ice and freezing fog. And there could be a few snow showers on Monday night in the South.”

July to December was the UK’s wettest second half of a year since records began 134 years ago in 1890, with rainfall 70% above average in parts, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology said.

Skies be mainly dry ahead, but with bitter daytime highs of around 7C in the South and 5C in the North until next weekend.

Nights are set to plunge towards -6C in England in coming nights, with -10C on the cards in Scotland during the next week.

A yellow Government cold weather health warning was issued until Friday, warning hospitals to prepare to be busier than normal and ordering health staff to prepare to make daily visits or phone calls to the vulnerable.

More snow is likely at times after next weekend.

The UK Health Security Agency cold alert said: “A brisk easterly wind will make it feel much colder.

“Temperatures are likely to be a few degrees below average across much of the UK, with more widespread frosts.

“Ice is likely to be an issue for many, given the very wet ground in most areas.”

A Met Office forecaster said: “You’ll certainly need that winter coat.”
