A 26-year-old footballer who played in the Libertadores Cup has died in a head-on car crash on Sunday morning, along with two other men, in a horrific two vehicle smash

A 26-year-old football star has tragically lost his life in a head-on car crash.

Marcos Olmedo, who made five appearances in the Libertadores Cup, died on Sunday (24 Aug) morning. Two other men, aged 30 and 34, also died in the crash, which involved two vehicles.

CCTV footage showed a pickup truck straddling the solid white edge line before colliding at speed with an oncoming car. The crash occurred on the E20 highway in Quinindé, Ecuador, as reported by NeedToKnow.

Emergency services attended the scene, but there was nothing they could do for the victims.

Olmedo, from Guayaquil, was father to a three-year-old boy called Lemarcus with his wife Evelyn Clavijo. She said in an agonising Facebook post yesterday: “Those who knew Marcos Olmedo know the kind of person he was. He taught me that you always have to give what is needed, not what you have left over.

“It's up to me to work to raise our son and give him what he always wanted: an education, a roof over his head, values, and guidance and instruction in the word of God.”

Revealing they had met almost seven years ago before getting married, Evelyn added: “He was afraid to entrust his firstborn to anyone else, so I devoted myself to our son Lemarcus. With my heart broken into a thousand pieces, I write these lines”

In a follow-up post she wrote: “How do I get over you love of my life? How do I explain this to our son? This hurts and tears my soul. Rest in peace my beautiful love.”

Olmeda played just four matches for top-flight Mushuc Runa SC after joining the Ambato-based side in June. Mushuc Runa said in an Instagram post alongside a black ribbon photo of the footballer: “With deep sorrow we regret to inform you of the death of our beloved player Marcos Olmedo.

“Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this time of great sorrow. Rest in peace Marcos.”

He was listed in the squad for their home game against CD Macará – one of his former clubs – on Saturday (23 Aug), but remained on the bench.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Olmedo played for several teams during his professional career, which began in 2017, including LDU Quito and CD El Nacional, two of Ecuador’s most successful clubs. He scored his only career goal for the latter in 2024.

A spokesperson for El Nacional described him as a “warrior who marked our history and brought us glory with a star after 18 long years of waiting”.

Olmedo made five appearances in the Libertadores Cup in 2024 and 2025.

He won three titles during his career – the Copa Sudamericana in 2023 with LDU Quito, the Copa Ecuador in 2024 with El Nacional, and the LigaPro Serie A with LDU Quito.

The accident is currently under investigation.
