The Clans Will Rise Again is a loose sequel of the Tunes Of War album, but this
time not a concept album about the Scottish history, rather a work about
Scotland, it's mysticism and it's people.

So you either like 80s metal or not. It was a time when metal tried to escape its way out of the funky stoner scene of Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly to something faster and more enhanced with hair products and mascara. Some bands couldn’t play their instruments. However, some bands were excellent and made an impact in spite of their spewing cheese. Two of those bands were Judas Priest and Mötley Crüe. Even with their antics considered, they made damn good music. Sister Sin are a band who used Priest and Crüe to jettison themselves from Sweden and crash here in the U.S. If you survived the impact, they deserve your attention.

True Sounds of the Underground is their second album and an improvement over their hey-that’s-not-so-bad debut, Switchblade Serenades. When I first heard Sister Sin, I thought they were just a Crüe/Priest ripoff. They even bill themselves that way. Even though their music is influenced by 80s balls-to-the-wall metal, they are far from a cheap imitation. Sister Sin uses their influences to form a cast and then they pour their own molten style into each track.

Just the opener, “Sound of the Underground”, had me at the intro. The second song, “Outrage”, does sound a little too much like “Too Young to Fall in Love”, but as part of the whole album, it’s forgivable. “Better Than Them” is a fast rocker full of fist-pumping moments and when it’s over, you will also hate The Man; Sister Sin totally did their job. “24/7″ is probably the weakest song from True Sounds of the Underground and the following tracks “Heading for Hell” and “I Stand Alone” make up for it. By the time the album closes with “Times Aren’t A-Changing” you’ll realize there are no wimpy ballads and you’ve unknowingly punched holes in the walls throughout your house. Then you’ll play the album again so you can finish off the rest of your dry wall.

Sister Sin is a truly competent band. Jimmy, their guitarist, has a handle on his part. His muscular riffs carry each song and fling them in your face. Dave’s masterful drumming keeps the songs grounded enough so you won’t actually suffer too much physical damage when the songs are flung at your head. The true star of Sister Sin, though, is the lead singer Liv. Her gruff alto is strong enough to buttress the side of a mountain to prevent an avalanche, but I get the impression she’d let the rocks slide over you anyway.

True Sounds of the Underground is a powerful improvement over Switchblade Serenades and Sister Sin seems to be growing apart from their influences into an in-your-face style of rock we haven’t been treated to since Nirvana sent 80s metal bands packing. The album is infinitely re-playable and is a good staple for anyone needing a dose of old school. Sister Sin is reclaiming glam metal and doing it without makeup and big hair. Take that Brett Michaels.
