A major incident has been declared by police investigating the incident on Moy Road, South Wales this morning with schools on lockdown and armed officers swarming

A knifeman is on the run after a "heavily pregnant" woman was stabbed near a primary school this morning.

The 29-year-old was reportedly attacked in the street as she took her child to school. It is understood to be a domestic abuse revenge attack, the Mirror reports.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from the area after a "major incident" was declared on Moy Road, Aberfan, South Wales just after 9.10am this morning. Locals reported finding the woman in a pool of blood on the pavement and some came out with pillows and blankets. Armed cops swooped and nearby schools have been put on lockdown.

Residents said the woman, believed to be "heavily pregant", had moved to the village recently after being involved in a domestic abuse case in England. Villager Gareth Jones said: “She’s not been here for long and was heavily pregnant - not far from giving birth.

“She was taking her child to one of the local schools when this man came out of nowhere and stabbed her in the street. It looks like the fellow is still on the loose, there are police everywhere.”

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are responding to [a] serious assault that took place on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr just before 9.10am this morning.

"Armed officers are in the area, and we request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident."

Nearby Greenfield School confirmed students are being kept indoors.

A statement from head teacher Rhiannon S. Davies read: "We are aware of an ongoing police incident in Aberfan. We just wanted to reassure you that as a precaution we are keeping the pupils safe inside the building, and all perimeter gates are locked."

Another school in the vicinity, Trinity Childcare, released a statement which read: "We are currently in lockdown as a precaution due to an incident within the community. All staff and children are safe."

A Member of the Senedd for Merthyr Tydfil, Dawn Bowden wrote on social media: "I am aware of a serious incident in Aberfan this morning. I have spoken to the police and will await further information from them.

"However, please take advice given by the police who will be grateful for your co-operation while this incident is dealt with. Thank you."

South Wales Police said in an updated statement: "A search of the immediate area is being carried out by armed officers. Local schools have activated their lockdown protocols to keep pupils safe whilst the incident is ongoing.

"We continue to request that people avoid the area so that we can effectively deal with this incident. The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this time."
