Henry Nowak's final hours - stabbing, arrest death and chilling last words he heard
Henry's family called his treatment by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary "inhumane and degrading" as one of the officers involved in the arrest has quit the force
Henry Nowak's death has sparked outrage after bodycam footage showed police officers dismiss his appeals for help when he told them he had been stabbed and couldn't breathe. One officer even replied: "I don't think you have, mate."
Instead of being treated as a victim, he was arrested as a suspect, dragged across the gravel and handcuffed as he lay dying. The final words he heard before his young life ebbed away was a police officer reading him his rights as he was arrested for assault.
Speaking after his killer Vickrum Digwa was jailed for murder on Monday, Henry's heartbroken dad Mark Nowak said: "Henry did not die with dignity, he did not die with the care he deserved. He lost consciousness before anyone believed him."
Walking home
Mark said Henry was walking home after a night out with with his uni football teammates when he was stabbed multiple times with a 21cm Sikh ceremonial dagger. As he tried to flee, he was chased, abused and filmed by Digwa and others at the scene.
When cops arrived at the scene in Southampton on December 3 last year, Digwa lied to them and claimed he was a victim of a race attack. Bodycam footage released showed him tell officers his turban had been knocked off and he had been injured.
Racism accusation
The distressing footage – released by Hampshire Police amid growing outrage at Henry's treatment – shows Digwa claim he had suffered a swollen eye and bruising. Henry is heard saying "I've been stabbed" as he lies prone on the floor.
In the footage Henry is heard repeatedly saying: "I've been stabbed". But the arresting officer says "I don't think you have mate" as he pulls him along the gravel and puts him in handcuffs behind his back.
"I can't breathe"
Stricken Henry is heard groaning as he placed in cuffs and repeatedly tells the officer: "I can't breathe". Almost two minutes after the footage begins, an officer lifts his top up but doesn't look any further.
A bystander is heard saying "he hasn't been stabbed, I don't know why he's saying that", but Henry pleads once more: "Please brother, I can't breathe." Shockingly, an ambulance was only called two minutes and 48 seconds after the footage begins.
Henry's family, from Chafford Hundred, Essex, called his treatment by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary "inhumane and degrading". One of the officers involved in the arrest has quit the force and the police watchdog is investigating the incident.
Violent protests
Amid a growing backlash by the public and politicians over his treatment, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage was accused of stoking divisions after claiming the case was evidence of a "two-tier culture" and called for people to respond with "pure cold rage".
On Tuesday night, hundreds of protesters clashed with cops near the site of the fatal stabbing after they gathered outside Southampton Central Police Station. They pelted police with missiles nears Digwa's home, where crowds had later gathered.
Far-right agitator Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was among those at the scene and addressed the crowd, claiming Henry was arrested "because he was white". At least two people were arrested after the night of violence.
Henry's dad Mark had earlier said: "We do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension."
