Jamie Carragher's joke about Kate Abdo's love life spectacularly backfired on live TV after Arsenal dumped Porto out of the Champions League.
The CBS crew were back on TV screens on Tuesday evening as Arsenal overcame a 1-0 deficit to see off the Portuguese giants on spot-kicks at the Emirates Stadium. And as they analysed the game, the four of them were up to their usual fun and games.
However, Carragher's sudden quip left Thierry Henry and Micah Richards – who immediately looked away – in silence, while Abdo was visibly annoyed. They had been passing around an Arsenal jersey, which was on the shoulders of Liverpool hero Carragher at the time.
The ex-Reds defender said: "You [Henry] can wear it next and for the last part you [Abdo] have to wear it!" However, when Abdo refused to wear the shirt, saying she's loyal, Carragher quipped back: "To who?"
After Abdo confirmed Manchester United, Carragher jumped in with: "Not to Malik!" The panel was left in stunned silence at the reference to her fiancee, as Henry shot glances at Carragher while Richards looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.
"Why would you even say that," Abdo questioned as Carragher laughed to himself.
Abdo recently went public with her new beau, Malik Scott, Deontay Wilder's trainer. However, before sharing the snap on Instagram, Carragher and Richards had poked fun at the presenter's new relationship during Champions League broadcasts. Fans, though, felt Carragher went a step too far.
"Good Kate didn't get mad but was certainly not happy," one fan posted in reaction to the footage from Tuesday night. While a second shared: "Micah makes this. When his head drops to the floor. You know Carragher has dropped a howler...."
"Micah’s instant look at the floor, Henry pretending he didn’t hear it, and the disgust on her face," a third said.
And another added: "You know its a bad joke when you cant even get a laugh from Micah!"
