JEREMY CROSS: Roma sacking Jose Mourinho should ring alarm bells at any Premier League club who might still entertain the prospect of hiring the once-top tier manager who's no longer elite

When it comes to Jose Mourinho, history has an unpalatable habit of repeating itself.

He breezes into a club full of bluster, charm and charisma. But ends up leaving it full of anger and blame instead, making sure the finger is pointed at others rather than him.

T'was ever thus with someone who has to be one of the most high-maintenance managers football has seen. So there was little or no shock at the news AS Roma had become the latest club to tire of indulging the petulant Portuguese and had sacked him.

Mourinho had compared himself to Harry Potter following Roma's recent loss to neighbours and hated rivals Lazio. A defeat which also saw Mourinho receive his second successive red card.

His reference to the famous wizard was Mourinho suggesting his profile in football had been raising expectations for what Roma could actually achieve. Classic Jose.

But the harsh truth is, Mourinho lost his magic touch a long time ago. It's one of the main reasons he found himself managing Roma in the first place.

Let's be clear, Mourinho will go down as one of the managerial greats. Leading unfancied Porto to the Champions League title is the stuff of legend. Doing the same with Inter Milan is an achievement not too far behind, either. He's also won league titles in four different countries.

But he's also overseen some equally memorable failures, like not conquering Europe while managing Real Madrid or Chelsea, when he had almost unlimited funds at his disposal. He was unable to revive the fortunes of Manchester United, despite winning the Europa League. While his time as Tottenham boss will be remembered with little or no fondness whatsoever.

There is now talk of him wanting to return to a job in the Premier League. But it would take a brave club to entertain someone who is starting to resemble the bloke that football forgot. Because even someone as successful as him is not immune from being left behind.

It feels like his time at the highest level has been and gone. Mourinho is someone who looks outdated and stale in comparison to elite coaches like Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and even Mikel Arteta.

He might need English football again, but the national sport no longer needs Mourinho and all that goes with him. He carries more baggage these days than the Kardashians going on a luxury holiday. Because in 2024, more than two decades after he arrived at Chelsea like a whirlwind to change the face of English football, Mourinho now deals in recrimination and rancour.

His sensible option would be to take a national team job, so he can grow old with less pressure and more class. But the chances of the former 'Special One' disappearing with dignity will be slimmer than Sheffield United's chances of winning the title this season.
