Storm Bram has started to wreak havoc on the English footballing pyramid with a League One match already postponed due to an "unplayable" pitch

Storm Bram is already wreaking havoc with one League One match postponed due to an "unplayable" pitch.

Basement boys Port Vale had been hoping to move up the table on Tuesday evening as they clashed with high-flyers Bradford City at Vale Park. However, the game has been postponed after a pitch inspection from referee Benjamin Speedie.

The club said in a statement: “MATCH POSTPONED. Following a pitch inspection, the Vale Park playing surface has been deemed unplayable by the match official due to large amounts of standing water.

"This evening’s match against Bradford City has been postponed.” Bradford also relayed the news to their followers: “A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

“Supporters will be able to claim a refund for their ticket once a new date has been confirmed, if they are unable to attend the rearranged match.”

Further pitch inspections will be held across England as games are set to kick off in the Championship, League One and League Two. Tottenham are the sole English Champions League side to be playing on home soil against Slavia Prague.

Across the border in Scotland, Elgin City’s game against East Fife in the KDM Evolution Trophy has also been postponed.

Yellow weather warnings for rain and wind were issued for the entire west coast of Britain. They cane into effect from 10pm last night and last until 4pm today.

Meanwhile, Cornwall and Devon have had an amber warning for rain from midnight until 10am with flooding and travel disruption expected. Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil has also received an amber warning.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Dan Suri, said: “Storm Bram will bring a very wet and windy spell of weather, with very strong winds and further heavy rain which, falling over saturated ground, could cause flooding impacts.

“Within the Amber wind warning over northwest Scotland, gusts of up to 9 mph could be recorded.

“More widely, gusts of 50-60mph, and perhaps 70mph in a few spots, are expected across Wales, southwest England and Northern Ireland."
