Play was abandoned in the Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton Town after Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch, months on from his play-off final scare

Bournemouth versus Luton Town was abandoned after Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch for the second time this year.

The Luton captain, 29, suffered a health scare during the Championship play-off final back in May and had to be stretchered off at Wembley. And history worryingly repeated itself at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday (December 16) afternoon.

Lockyer went down off the ball in the second half of the Premier League clash. His manager Rob Edwards ran onto the pitch and took the rest of his side away as paramedics rushed to the scene, with it later confirmed he'd had a cardiac arrest.

Referee Simon Hooper ordered both teams back into the dressing rooms as Lockyer received treatment. After a number of minutes he was once again stretchered down the tunnel.

The Bournemouth staff doctor confirmed he was "alert and responsive" as he exited the pitch, according to Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse. His team-mate Issa Kabore could be seen on his knees praying, while all four sides of the ground rose to their feet to applaud Lockyer.

Footballers and fans alike expressed similar sentiments in messages online. Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: "Tom Lockyer [praying emoji]." John Terry echoed: "Praying for Tom Lockyer."

Everton defender Ashley Young posted: "Thoughts and prayers with Tom Lockyer and his family." Match of the Day host Gary Lineker commented: "Tom Lockyer has been stretchered off. Difficult to be sure if that’s good news but let’s hope so."

Play was suspended on the south coast for around half an hour before Hooper and his fellow officials abandoned the fixture after consulting with the players, who didn't want to continue. Lockyer had been taken to hospital.

A teary-eyed Edwards and his Luton squad emerged back onto the pitch to applaud the home crowd for their support in emotional scenes.

The score had been 1-1 prior to the incident, with Elijah Adebayo giving Luton an early lead on their travels. Dominic Solanke had levelled for the Cherries shortly before Lockyer went down.

The centre-back, who is also a regular fixture in the Wales squad, underwent heart surgery in the summer to address an irregular heartbeat before he was cleared to play again.

Luton issued a statement shortly after the match was abandoned, confirming he'd suffered a cardiac arrest. They thanked the medical staff for their actions and the supporters for their response.

"We are sorry to all supporters present that players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue with the game after seeing their much-loved team-mate and friend taken off like that, and staff could not carry on with managing the game in such circumstances having had to deal with the situation," their post added.
