Robert Card, the gunman who slaughtered 18 people at a bowling alley and bar and grille has been found dead after a three-day manhunt which saw the public ordered to stay indoorsThe gunman who slaughtered 18 people at a bowling alley has been found dead after a huge manhunt.

Robert Card, 40, was found dead in Lisbon, Maine, just a few miles from where he carried out a shooting at a bowling alley and a bar and grill in Lewistown, Maine. It has been described as the deadliest mass shooting event of 2023.

Card's body was found near a recycling centre he was previously fired from, in the same clothes as he was wearing when he conducted the grim shooting on Wednesday.

He is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was reportedly found near a dumpster. His car was discovered close by and it is unclear as of yet how long the man had been dead.

Officials are refusing to rule out whether or not Card had an accomplice for his actions. Lewiston police chief David St. Pierre confirmed he was informed of the death earlier today (October 28).

The shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille left 18 dead, with residents told to lock their doors and hide after Card, armed with a long rifle, began opening fire on Wednesday evening.

A shelter order from authorities was lifted on Friday, 48 hours after the shootings took place. Governor Janet Mills warned people not to approach Card under any circumstances during the manhunt.

Card had multiple warrants out for his arrest following the shooting, which has left some in a critical condition and fighting for their lives in hospital.

It was initially believed Card had received military training, though the U.S. Army has since confirmed he had not been a recipient of any formal training from them, nor was he an instructor for the military.

The 16 males and two females killed on Wednesday night range in age from 14 to 76, a medical examiner confirmed yesterday (Friday, October 27). Three victims of the shooting died after being taken to hospital, while seven were killed at the Just-In-Time bowling alley, and eight died at Schemengees Bar and Grille.
