Manchester United moved up to seventh in the Premier League after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on Sunday and now enter a critical period of the season

Manchester United are back on the winning track after clinching a crucial 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, even the match-winner Mason Mount didn't anticipate scoring the decisive goal. United's captain Bruno Fernandes made the unexpected choice to set up Mount for the winning strike instead of taking the shot himself. This decision even took Mount by surprise as he recalled his victorious moment in south London.

In other news, United have suffered a significant setback with reports suggesting Manchester City are advancing in their pursuit of United's top target. Here's the latest from Old Trafford ahead of United's clash with West Ham on Thursday.

Fernandes' prowess with free-kicks is well-known among supporters, but the United skipper stepped aside for the vital decider at Palace on Sunday.

Rather, he took charge of the situation before watching Mount deliver when the team needed it most, reports the Mirror.

Making his first start in over a month, Mount was as surprised as anyone else to see the ball had been passed to him to strike from the edge of Dean Henderson's box. His reaction revealed his captain had caught him off guard, although the quality of his strike didn't give that impression.

Mount said: "We always have a little conversation. I said to him, 'I will roll it for you,' and then he said, 'You stay there,' and then I said, 'You shoot'.

"Because obviously the sun was difficult today and was causing a few problems for us first half with long balls and I thought it would be difficult for Deano [Henderson] to see the ball in goal.

"And then he said: 'You stay there,' and rolled it over and you can see with my reaction to getting on the end of it... He obviously said it but really quick and that's why it helped out the situation.

"They didn't see it coming, they didn't see us talking, they were late to react, and it is about finding that little bit of space in the wall, that little disruption, and then hit the target."

He executed the plan perfectly, with Palace's fractured wall unable to shield Henderson's near post as the crucial goal found its way home. The victory was sufficient to lift United to seventh position, leaving them just four points adrift of fierce rivals City in second spot.

On the subject of the Manchester derby rivalry, United and City look set for a transfer battle next year over Elliot Anderson's signature. Reports suggest City are preparing to intensify their pursuit of the Nottingham Forest sensation.

Ruben Amorim's team has been consistently linked with a host of midfield talents over the past year. After the hype around players like Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba has subsided, Anderson has emerged as United's alleged top target.

However, according to the Daily Mail, City are ramping up their interest to prevent Anderson from being snapped up by rivals United or Liverpool. It's suggested Forest are demanding more than £80million for the player, although a move in January seems highly improbable.

Newcastle reluctantly sold Anderson to Forest last year to adhere to Premier League spending regulations. Just over a year later, it appears the 23-year-old could command a fee up to three times what was originally paid.

United might be saying goodbye to Casemiro in the summer when his contract, which includes a 12-month extension clause, is set to expire. There are also significant doubts surrounding the future of Kobbie Mainoo, whose sale could potentially fund United's bid to outdo City in the race for Anderson.
