The teenager was held by police and will be quizzed on Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder after gunshots were fired at revellers in a busy city centre street lined with bars and restaurants

A boy of 14 has been arrested after six people were shot in a busy city centre street. Cops swarmed the scene in central Gävle, Sweden, after gunfire rang out in a street lined with bars and restaurants.

The teenager was held by police and will be quizzed later on Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder, a spokesman said.

Police said the majority of the casualties are young adults, but there are also people under the age of 18 among those injured. The extent of their injuries were not immediately disclosed.

Spokesman Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro told local media it is too early to comment on any motive, saying: “I don't think we'll have it during the day."

Cops were called at around 2am on Saturday morning to reports of gunfire in the Söder area of the port city. Photos from the scene show a major emergency response had been scrambled and a huge police cordon in place.

All six victims were taken to hospital by ambulance, police said. At least three gunshot victims sought shelter at a nearby restaurant, local media reported.

Mr Ahlén-Svalbro added: "So far we are working broadly and I cannot confirm that there is any connection to the criminal network environment. I can't go into any possible theories. We don't initially suspect it's terror-related.

"The incident is being investigated as attempted murder. We have a large resource on site in the area, so our assessment is that there is no danger to the public, so I understand that people may be concerned.

"It is quite close in time after the incident that the boy was taken into custody. The boy is suspected of attempted murder."

A woman who lives near the scene told local radio station P4 Gävleborg: "You don't really want to be out late at night. You're worried about your children. What a society we've created. It's crazy."

Another witness said: "It feels terrible. Six people are being shot a few meters away from me." A large area remained cordoned off on Saturday morning and technical work is underway at the site.

Gävle, with a population of around 80,000, is the 13th most populated city in Sweden and is the oldest in the country's historic northern lands. It is around 86 miles north of the capital Stockholm.
