A grandfather and his three-month-old granddaughter were mauled to death an alleged dog attack involving multiple pitbulls at their Tennessee home - some have since been destroyed

A grandfather and his three-month-old granddaughter have been killed after reportedly being mauled to death by a pack of pitbulls. James Alexander Smith, 50 and the baby were reportedly attacked in their Tennessee home. Police were forced to shoot some of the seven beasts, which had allegedly broke free from their yard.

Neighbour Rebecca Adams said the newborn’s heartbroken mother was screaming “my baby” as authorities broke into the house to try and save the victims, The Sun reports. The dogs were still attacking the infant’s body when they arrived, according to local news reports.

Ms Adams told WSMV how the dogs would often break loose and go after other animals in the neighbourhood. “They’d run after cats, they’d run after dogs, you know, animal things," she said.

“I could see them be aggressive towards animals. Never did I think they would do that to the kids.”

Police are now investigating whether the pair were mauled to death or were already dead before the dog attack. Attorney General Craig Northcott said: “This was an especially difficult and brutal scene.

“Please pray for the family of the victims in this difficult time as well as the first responders, as they cope with the trauma from what they witnessed.”

Officials said the surviving dogs were taken into custody by Tullahoma Animal Control. They have not yet determined whether criminal charges will be filed.

The house was also condemned because of its condition, meaning the family must find a new place to live and get essential items. A GoFundMe page has since been set up to support the family with over $42,000 already raised towards a $55k target.

It states: "On behalf of my fiancé’s Memaw, we are asking for help after a tragedy no family should ever have to face. She lost both her son and her 3-month-old great-grandbaby in a heartbreaking and unexpected attack. The pain of losing two loved ones at once is something words can’t fully describe.

"To make things even harder, the family home was taken away shortly after the tragedy. They lost not only two precious lives, but also their home, their belongings, and their sense of security — all within hours. Memaw is now trying to care for the six remaining children, who suddenly have no clothes, no beds, and nowhere to go.

"Her son did not have life insurance, leaving the family with the overwhelming burden of funeral expenses on top of everything else they are trying to piece together."
