A horror mass shooting at Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has seen a two adult victims killed and three rushed to hospital after shots were fired during a high school hockey game

Two people have tragically been killed in a horror mass shooting at an ice staking rink as a high school hockey game was being played, the mayor's office has confirmed.

Three other victims have been rushed to hospital following the incident at Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, this afternoon (February 16).

Confusion was sparked earlier when the Pawtucket mayor's office earlier allegedly confirmed one of the victims was a young girl, who was killed. However, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves has since confirmed a girl was not killed in the incident.

Speaking to reporters, she confirmed three adults were killed, including the suspect, and three other victims have been hospitalised in critical condition.

"It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute," she said. Goncalves did not provide details about the suspect or the ages of those who were killed, though she said it appeared that both victims were adults.

The gunman, who has been confirmed as deceased, opened fire during the game. Posts on social media suggest the gunman had fired from behind the seating of one of the teams.

According to the schedule, a 2pm hockey game between Coventry and Blackstone Valley Schools was scheduled to be on at the time of the shooting.

Shocking video footage has appeared online showing the moment players and crowd members run away after several shots are heard.

Other footage also show what appears to be bullets fire towards the players on the ice. However, it does not appear any of them were injured as they all left the ice.

Local reporter Branden Mello, who writes for the Woonsocket Call and Pawtucket Times, said one of the parents of the school kids has been dubbed a hero for attempting to disarm the suspected shooter.

Mello wrote on X: "A North Smithfield father is one of the heroes of the afternoon. According to multiple people in the stands, he grabbed a gun out of the shooter's hand, but the individual had a second weapon."

Providence Police posted a message on the incident on X: They said: "Providence Police are monitoring the situation in Pawtucket. We currently have officers on scene providing assistance."

FBI's Boston division have also been made aware of the situation but confirmed they are not involved.

Writing on X: "#FBI Boston is aware of the shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, RI, today and has responded to the scene. We stand ready to assist our partners at the Pawtucket Police Department and @RIStatePolice with any and all resources they need.

At this time, there is no imminent threat to public safety and there has been no request for FBI assistance. However, the public should continue to avoid the area. Our prayers are with everyone impacted by this incident."
