Police investigating creepy trend of recording 'vulnerable' women on nights out

The trend of filming unsuspecting women on a night out in Manchester and posting the clips on social media just got creepier, as women who are visibly drunk are now being targeted

Police are looking into cases of creepy viral videos posted on social media in which women are filmed without their consent while wasted on a night out.

Although "Manchester nightlife" accounts on social media sites have been filming women out in the Deansgate area without permission for years, it appears that footage is now deliberately targeting women who are visibly drunk. The young ladies become the unknowing stars of these predatory and voyeuristic clips during their vulnerable moments.

In one video a woman can be seen crawling in the road, Manchester Evening News reports, while a woman being held up by a friend as she falls over features in another.

The captions, such as 'Beautiful Drunk Girl Wander on the Street of Manchester' and 'Beautiful Single Ladies One Night Losing Control in the Manchester On January 26 2024', suggest women who are visibly intoxicated have been targeted, although the videos also capture footage of women who are walking down the street with friends on a night out.

The videos, which are posted to @VoiceofValleys on YouTube, have all been posted within the last week. However, it is unclear exactly when they were filmed. In the description, a number of the videos take lines from a 2005 Lancashire Telegraph news article titled 'Night out ends in sex attack ordeal for woman, 31'.

Following previous M.E.N reports, Greater Manchester Police said all officers that police the nighttime economy in Manchester city centre are briefed before every shift on this issue, adding they "are all very aware of it" and are actively looking out for "anyone that might be filming in a predatory manner".

They also reiterated that while it is not illegal to film people in public without their consent, "women and girls should feel safe on a night out", urging women who are filmed "in a manner which is causing them alarm or distress" to contact the police immediately.

Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins of GMP’s City of Manchester Central district said: “We are aware that concern over a number of online accounts filming women on nights out has been raised on social media.

“Whilst it is not illegal to film people in public without their consent, every report would be assessed individually, as context can determine whether this behaviour is deemed criminal.

“We take the safety of women and girls incredibly seriously, including within the city centre’s night life, and would encourage anyone who believes that they or others are being stalked, harassed, up-skirted, or filmed in a manner which is causing them alarm or distress to please speak to our officers on the ground, or report via our 999 or 101 services."
