Snow to hit UK with -5C 'Arctic attack' stretching 700 miles in four-day freeze

The UK will be battered by a 700 mile-wide 'Arctic attack' as temperatures plummet to -5C this week, with England at risk of seeing its first snow of the winter season

Brace yourselves it looks like winter really is coming – for a few days at least.

Britain is set to be chillier than Moscow with a -5C 700 mile-wide 'Arctic attack' that could bring the first snow of the season and give us an early taste of winter this week.

Temperatures are expected to plummet as a four-day freeze kicks in from Thursday. The Met Office has issued warnings of potential snow on Scottish peaks, while BBC Weather has hinted at wintry showers possibly reaching England's high ground.

Daytime temperatures will take a nosedive to a mere 10C even down South by Friday, with frosty nights close to freezing or below, especially up North where -5C is on the cards. It'll be nippier at night than Moscow's mild 3C lows.

The week starts with showers, but ex-Hurricane Kirk might whip up blustery winds and rain along the south coast midweek, reports the Mirror.

However, it looks like our neighbours in France and Spain will cop the brunt of the storm. Netweather's Nick Finnis reckons: "The UK now looks set to dodge a bullet with Kirk appearing to track to France."

BBC Weather chimes in with: "Colder air of Arctic origin will this week bring heavy rain or showers which could turn wintry over higher ground in Scotland and perhaps further south. It will be quite chilly, with frosty nights possible."

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Monday has heavy showers, with more persistent rain in the North following and a small chance of wind and rain in the far South in midweek. Colder weather, perhaps with snow on Scottish mountains, will work its way south by the end of the week."

The Met Office's forecast from Tuesday to Thursday predicts a mix of sunshine and showers, with "Some more persistent rain in the north," and a "Small chance of wind and rain affecting the far south. Rain clearing southwards on Thursday to leave brighter, colder weather."
