Weather forecaster gives 'White Christmas' verdict – see what '95%' of Brits can expect

EXCLUSIVE: December 25 is likely to bring a White Christmas, but not for everyone - a leading weather expert has pinpointed exactly where could see snow on the most festive day of the year

A leading weather expert has revealed what Brits can expect on Christmas Day - with snow on the cards for some.

Snow is expected this weekend in the north of Scotland, where a Met Office weather warning is in place.

Jim Dale, Senior Meteorological Consultant at British Weather Services, explained this snow will likely be "transitory". He told the Daily Star: "We are between the two air masses. The big, cold, freezing, snowy air mass over Scandinavia and halfway towards Scotland - that's in one place - and the Azores High that is out to the south-west.

"Between all that, what we've got is the jet stream. We're in the transition zone between the two, hence the reason for the winds, the rain and the bits of snow. So whatever happens over this weekend in terms of snow, it'll be Scotland only and primarily the high ground."

Mr Dale expects this pattern to remain in place for Christmas Day on Monday. He said: "By the time we come to Christmas Day, for the most part - for 95% of the population - it will be mild. Even very mild in the south.

"The only cold weather is likely to be over Scotland and particularly northern Scotland, particularly later in the day." Mr Dale said areas north of the Great Glen could provide the "perfect" Christmas Day weather.

He added: "So in effect it will be a White Christmas because there will be one flake of snow falling somewhere in northern Scotland - but to be honest that’s a bit silly, isn’t it. That’s where it will be unless you want to jet off to Scandinavia - in which case you can literally fill your boots!"

The Met Office has issued a similar verdict. The national weather agency said in a statement: "A White Christmas – which is defined by the Met Office as a single snowflake falling on Christmas Day – is likely, with wintry showers likely over high ground in the far north of Scotland."
