Liverpool scored a dramatic and controversial late winner against Nottingham Forest, leaving the hosts furious with referee Paul Tierney, who flashed his red card after the match

Raging Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly chased the referee down the tunnel after Liverpool's controversial late winner.

Substitute Darwin Nunez scored the only goal beyond the eight minutes of added time which had been announced to the City Ground crowd. The late twist robbed struggling Forest of a crucial point while giving Liverpool a boost in the title race.

Forest were unhappy with referee Paul Tierney for stopping the game while they were attacking due to Ibrahima Konate's head injury. The official then restarted play with an uncontested drop ball for Liverpool, who went upfield and scored through Nunez from Alexis Mac Allister's cross, as reported by the Mirror.

Furious at the turn of events, Forest coach Steven Reid was shown a red card as Tierney found himself surrounded by players and staff. Rob Schofield, a reporter for BBC Radio Five Live, was in the tunnel post-game and gave a first-hand account of the explosive scenes involving Marinakis.

He reported: "You rarely see scenes like that in the tunnel. We saw Steven Reid getting frustrated. He and the Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis pursued referee Paul Tierney and fourth official Graham Scott all the way to the referee's office, yelling at them: 'Respect the players! Respect the players! This happens every week! Respect the players!'

Schofield added: "Marinakis had to be removed by security at one stage. The Forest players were furious, Nuno looked absolutely crestfallen. Jurgen Klopp stormed past me saying he doesn't know why he's getting so much flak. It really was all kicking off down here. Furious scenes."

Asked about the decisions at the end of the game, Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo told Match of the Day: “I don’t want to comment on the referee, I’m sorry, it's better [if I don't].” He added: “We are frustrated, we are disappointed, we are sad."

Forest fans didn't hold back though. One fumed: "Another #NFFC game influenced by the referee." A second said: "Dumbfounded as to how this results in a drop ball for Liverpool. Not to mention Konate getting straight up as soon as Tierney blows his whistle."

A third blasted: "Tierney wrongly giving Liverpool possession after the head ‘injury’ shows PGMOL is still having to make up for the time they wronged Liverpool at Spurs. What cost Liverpool in 1 game is being paid for by every opponent they face. No wonder they’re top."
