Central London has been brought to a standstill after a urination contraption designed to reduce the number of people taking a leak on the street is understood to have fallen on a worker killing them at the scene

A man has been crushed to death by a falling urinal near London's Trafalgar Square in the West End.

An air ambulance was spotted near the scene at Cambridge Circus by the Palace Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue just after 1pm on Friday, January 27.

In a statement, police said in a Tweet: "We’re sorry to have to update that, despite the efforts of emergency services, the man who was critically injured in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed. Cordons remain in place at the location.”

Authorities initially a workman has suffered "crush injuries" while working on a "telescopic urinal".

The toilet is understood to be designed to sit below the pavement during the day and is brought up above ground level at night time in a bid to stop people from going to the toilet on streets and pavements.

The air ambulance is thought to have landed at nearby Trafalgar Square as astonished onlookers whipped out phones to film the unusual scene.

The Mirror reports that a number of roads have now been closed.

The Metropolitan Police said in its initial statement: "Police were called at around 13:10hrs on Friday, 27 January, to a seriously injured man at Cambridge Circus, W1.

"The man is thought to have sustained crush injuries while working on a ‘telescopic urinal’ at the location.

"LFB, LAS and London’s Air Ambulance are in attendance. Officers are assisting with road closures."

The Metropolitan Police service for Westminster posted on its Twitter account that emergency services remain at the scene.

Telescopic urinals are believed to have first been installed in London's West End in 2002 in a bid to stop the anti-social act of street urination.

They are remotely controlled to rise hydraulically above ground to provide a service for nighttime revellers.

Speaking at the time of the announcement they were to be installed Councillor Judith Warner said: "This disgusting habit is a growing problem and we are determined to try and eradicate it.

"The pop-up loos are a further step in our campaign to tackle this menace and to provide people with an acceptable alternative to this anti-social behaviour."
