Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed he believed some teams didn't see the Reds as a credible title threat before Jurgen Klopp rocked up at Anfield in 2015

Jamie Carragher has claimed rival teams didn't see Liverpool as a threat before their Jurgen Klopp-led revival in 2015.

Liverpool had been in a period of decline after Rafael Benitez left the club, with their 2005 Champions League win a distant memory by the time they finished eighth in 2012. Brendan Rodgers' side then slumped to sixth in 2015, after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title the previous year.

Speaking in the first of a new five-part series based on Liverpool's revival after Klopp arrived, former Reds defender Carragher has revealed teams didn't see the Reds as a threat. He said: "We were a club who started every season hoping to get into the top four but not really believing it and most people in football, certainly our rivals, felt like we were done.

"I really believe that. Financially, we couldn't compete with the other teams. I don't think anyone saw us as a threat at all, really."

Speaking in the new documentary by fan channel The Anfield Wrap, ex-Reds midfielder Adam Lallana opened up on the difference Klopp made when he first walked through the doors, "You could see immediately he knew the formula for success. When he said what to do, you did it."

Lallana continued: "He has the X factor, doesn’t he? It’s as simple as that. The amazing ability he has to motivate players. If he’s left you out for 10, 11, 12 games you’re a bit down but somehow with him, you’ve still got so much respect for him even though you aren’t happy."

Klopp delivered Liverpool's first Premier League title - ending the sleeping giant's 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England in 2019/20 - after winning the Champions League the year beforehand. He has taken Liverpool to three Champions League finals in total, while also winning the FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

The Reds are currently in their most difficult period under Klopp, and Liverpool will be hoping for an upturn in form after the World Cup break. They now sit in sixth, seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, with a game in hand.
