Legendary Liverpool and Nottingham Forest defender Larry Lloyd dies aged 75
Ex-Liverpool and Nottingham Forest defender Larry Lloyd, who won two European Cups under Brian Clough, sadly passed away at the age of 75
Former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest legend Larry Lloyd has died at the age of 75.
The Bristol native had spent five years playing for the great Bill Shankly between 1969 and 1974, where he won the First Division title and the UEFA Cup in the same season in 1973.
He racked up 218 appearance for Liverpool in his tenure at Anfield. Following a two-year stint at Coventry City, he made the move to Forest in 1976 in a deal worth £60,000 and became an integral part of their two European Cup triumphs under iconic boss Brian Clough in 1979 and 1980.
Forest paid tribute to their former player on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday (March 28) as their official account's statement read: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Larry Lloyd. Part of the 'Miracle Men', Larry was an integral player in the Forest side that memorably won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, making 218 appearances for the club in total.
"We send our condolences to Larry’s friends and family at this truly sad time. Rest in peace, Larry." Lloyd - who made four appearances for England between 1971 and 1980 - hung up his boots in 1983 following a two-year spell with Wigan Athletic where he acted as a player/manager.
After leaving Wigan, he spent a year managing Notts County but was sacked after just one season after the club were relegated which brought an end to their three-year stay in the First Division.
Among the two European Cup's he won during his time at the City Ground, Lloyd also won the First Division title in Forest's first season back in the top-flight as well as two consecutive League Cup trophies.
In his 214 appearances for Forest, Lloyd enjoyed a stellar defensive partnership with fellow centre-back Kenny Burns playing in front of England great Peter Shilton before the defensive stalwarts both left the club in 1981.
Following his football career, Lloyd spent much of his life in Spain where he owned several bars as well as dealing in property sales before returning to home to the UK in 2021 to live in Nottinghamshire.
