Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso remains the target of several top clubs this summer but another candidate has emerged as Liverpool's potential successor to Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have identified an alternative to Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

Reds manager Klopp announced in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. It will mark the end of a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield for the German, with Liverpool now aiming to find a replacement for the summer.

The 2019/20 Premier League champions are still in the early stages of their search, with many details having gradually been honed by chief executive Billy Hogan. But one candidate - former Reds midfielder Alonso - has been touted as their primary target.

Alonso, 42, has impressed Europe’s elite clubs with his incredible season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen. He is currently on track to deliver the club’s first ever Bundesliga title ahead of giants Bayern Munich.

Despite it still being his first major managerial role, reports have suggested he is the target Liverpool will push hardest to get. But they will have to fend off interest from the likes of Bayern, Barcelona and even Real Madrid to do so.

In the event that Alonso chooses one of the aforementioned clubs, The Independent claims Liverpool will turn their attention to Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim is seen as the best alternative to World Cup winning Spaniard Alonso, who won one of his two Champions League trophies with Liverpool. Basque manager Amorim has similarly restored Sporting to glory after decades of underperforming.

And alongside being a likelier option than Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Amorim is attracting less demand from major clubs than Alonso.

Whoever Liverpool successfully appoint will work under a new sporting director at Anfield. The club are expected to change the structure in the wake of Klopp’s tenure, with the manager’s role being diluted and power being returned to the technical staff.
