Cristiano Ronaldo's outburst during Man United's clash with Brentford is not the first he's produced after being subbed in the Premier League and there have been plenty of other stroppy stars through the years

Cristiano Ronaldo's outburst during Manchester United's clash against Brentford isn't the first time he's had a sulk after being substituted in the Premier League.

In fact, plenty of stars have thrown their toys out of the pram in the English top flight when their manager has decided to haul them off.

There's usually a good reason for the change - but the player who's on the receiving end of it often can't understand that at the time.

Ronaldo's chewing gum spit, coat throw and arm raises are all angry actions that we've seen before.

On that note, Daily Star Sport is taking a look at the eight stroppiest substitutions in Premier League history.

Sadio Mane

Liverpool were well in control of their match at Burnley in August 2019 when Jurgen Klopp replaced Sadio Mane with Divock Origi.

An incensed Mane exited the pitch, fuming not because of the change, but because of an incident where Mohamed Salah hadn't passed him the ball minutes earlier.

The forward pointed the finger towards the bench and then began ranting at Klopp, who laughed off the rare rough moment in the Reds' title-winning season.

Do these strops show passion or are they disrespectful? Let us know in the comments section.

Mesut Ozil

There was no doubts about Mesut Ozil's quality at Arsenal, but there was a massive question mark over his attitude.

And the World Cup winner was so temperamental that there was two separate occasions where he showed his rage after being subbed.

The first involved him snubbing Unai Emery's handshake and throwing his gloves to the floor during a match at Crystal Palace in 2018, while the second a year later saw him boot the poor gloves away against Man City.

Hossam Ghaly

Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly was very much a squad player for Tottenham in the 2006/07 season and didn't have anywhere near the same level as star power as the other entrants on this list.

But that didn't stop him acting like a diva when Martin Jol cut his 90 minutes short against Blackburn in May 2007.

Ghaly took off his shirt and threw it in his manager's direction, before later apologising to the Spurs fans who felt disrespected by the stunt - but he never played for them again.

Carlos Tevez

Not only was he wearing the captain's armband, but Carlos Tevez had also scored the potential match-winning goal for Manchester City against Bolton in December 2010.

He therefore shook his head upon learning of Roberto Mancini's decision to take him off and as he got close to his manager he started shouting in his direction.

The pair shared a heated exchange of words before Tevez headed off to the bench in a huff.

Alexis Sanchez

When Arsene Wenger made the call to sub Alexis Sanchez off at Swansea in January 2017, the Chilean wasn't angry.

Instead, he produced the sort of sulk that a five-year-old would after they'd been sent to the naughty step.

Then-Arsenal star Sanchez put his head in his hands and covered himself with his coat so that he didn't have to interact with any of the rest of the Gunners bench.

Wayne Rooney

A Merseyside derby is as big a game as it gets for Everton, so nobody in blue wanted to make way at Goodison Park in April 2018 - especially not Wayne Rooney.

However, Sam Allardyce made the bold call to hook the England legend and was met with a frosty reception as a result.

Rooney strutted past his boss, snatched his coat from a coach and appeared to mutter "bulls***" as he took his spot on the sidelines.

As mentioned, Ronaldo's got previous for being a sulky sub and even made his feelings clear to Sir Alex Ferguson during his first spell with the Red Devils.

United had the Champions League final coming up after their Manchester derby in May 2009, so Fergie wanted to give his star man a rest.

Ronaldo clearly didn't feel he needed it as he threw his coat the ground, as he would go on to do again over a decade later, and repeatedly shook his head in the Old Trafford dugout.

The holy grail of Premier League substitutions was produced by a furious Granit Xhaka in October 2019.

Arsenal supporters booed their then captain as he came off, prompting him to sarcastically encourage them to up the noise some more.

He cupped his ear, told fans to "f*** off" twice and ripped off his shirt before storming down the tunnel, all of which led to him being stripped of the armband.
