The former Liverpool captain exited Wembley to jeers during England's 1-0 win over Australia but he decided to focus on the prestige of captaining his country following the game

Jordan Henderson was forced to endure boos from his own fans in England's game against Australia where he said it was an "honour" to captain his country.

The Three Lions triumphed 1-0 in the friendly thanks to a second-half strike from Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins as England were captained by the former Liverpool skipper with Harry Kane an unused substitute. Minutes after the opening goal, Henderson was subbed off for Kieran Trippier as he made his way to the dugout to the theme of boos from his own fans.

The 33-year-old created furore over the summer after leaving Liverpool for Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq where he was reunited with Steven Gerrard who's the head coach of the club. Throughout his 11 years at the Reds, Henderson was an active supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and his decision to depart for Saudi Arabia, where laws punish homosexuality with the death penalty stunned the public.

Friday's (October 13) game was Henderson's first in England since his transfer and the fans certainly made sure to let the midfielder know how they feel about him despite captaining the country. Despite the negative reaction he received, the Al-Ettifaq star displayed his joy about being able to lead his country in a series of snaps on Instagram.

He captioned the post - which was liked by over 83,000 people: "Always an honour to represent my country, never take it for granted. Extra special to lead the team out at Wembley." Following the game, England boss Gareth Southgate backed his player's dedication for his nation and slammed those for booing him instead of supporting the team.

"I really don’t understand it," he said. "He’s a player who has won 79 caps for England and his commitment and what he has delivered for England is exceptional. His role in the group on and off the pitch is phenomenally important," he said. "Some people deciding to boo I really don’t understand what that is for. Come on – we play Italy on Tuesday and let’s get behind this team. I don’t really know where we are heading with everything.

Among those disappointed with Henderson's decision to join the Saudi Pro League is England LGBTQ+ fan group, Three Lions Pride, whose chair, Joe White, opened up about the "contradictions" of the midfielder's words on why he joined the league and said his actions have "diminished" his previously good acts for the community.

Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football, Joe White said: "He comments when told about our protest that he was 'very hurt'. Well in Saudi Arabia, LGBT+ people's feelings are just hurt, they can be killed. It is one of the two countries in the world that Amnesty believe still do carry out killings just for people being LGBT. The issue with it is there are so many contradictions throughout what he's saying."
