A British policewoman on holiday in Paris was 'raped at knifepoint' according to a call placed with French police, who caught and arrested a suspect just an hour later

A British policewoman has been reportedly "raped at knifepoint" at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

The 23-year-old victim told French police a man with a knife attacked her in the capital city at the Champ-de-Mars shortly before midnight. The knife-wielding perpetrator fled the scene after the rape.

She added the suspect pulled a knife on her as she tried to deflect her advances. An anti-crime squad had rushed to the scene and the victim was taken care of by firefighters.

Police have since arrested a 35-year-old man, an hour after the woman reported the attack, giving a description of the suspect to anti-crime officers. The victim is believed to have been staying overnight with a friend in the French capital.

The attacker had jumped the victim when she went behind a bush to relieve herself. She was separated from her friend for just a few moments when the knife-wielding attacker threatened her.

Police squads from the 7th police station arrested a man following calls from the victim, with a suspect taken into custody overnight. It comes as an increase in police presence was spotted at the Eiffel Tower, the Daily Mail reported.

Clusters of police were seen wandering the streets as the city goes into a state of high alert over a deadly knife crime carried out earlier this week.
