Cristiano Ronaldo told he is 'holding Man Utd to ransom' and 'bullying' Erik ten Hag
Cristiano Ronaldo has continued to angle for a move away from Manchester United after reportedly failing to be convinced by Erik ten Hag's project and the club's direction earlier this week
Cristiano Ronaldo has been slammed for “bullying” Manchester United into leaving the club this summer.
The Red Devils ace handed in a transfer request last month but has been unable to secure a move away from Old Trafford. With the new Premier League season set to get underway next weekend, the Portuguese superstar’s future is still very much up in the air.
United reportedly failed to convince Ronaldo to withdraw his transfer request this week, with The Times claiming crunch showdown talks with the club and agent Jorge Mendes failed to convince the 37-year-old to stay. And now ex-Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair has blasted Ronaldo while commenting on the situation on talkSPORT.
Sinclair said: “He is holding the club to ransom. Can you imagine a player doing this to Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp?
“Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel… we saw how he handled the Romelu Lukaku situation, he wasn’t having any of his shenanigans. Even Mikel Arteta, a young manager, told Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his star player, ‘You’re not playing, I’ll get you out of here as soon as I can.’”
“I think that’s what Ronaldo is trying to do. I’ve always been brought up that no player is bigger than the club and if United heed to his demands, they’re proving they can be bullied off a footballer.”
Ronaldo is understood to have been encouraged by interest in him from Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich and hopes that United will come around to letting him leave halfway through his two-year deal. Interest in him had been slim up until now, though the star this month rejected a £255million offer to join a club in Saudi Arabia's Pro League.
Nevertheless, the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward is understood to have trained with Ten Hag's squad for the first time this week and was present during a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly success over Wrexham on Wednesday.
Ten Hag has been firm in his belief that he wants to work with Ronaldo and recently told reporters that he would have no issue fitting the five-time Ballon d'Or winner into his way of playing.
