Bewildered spectators couldn't believe their eyes after a 'disturbed' black bear attacked a performer and pinned him to the ground as his colleagues rushed to his rescue

A performing black bear lashed out at his circus master on stage in a brutal attack that horrified spectators..

The extraordinary footage captures the moment the performance descended into chaos after an Asian black bear named Xiong Xiong tackled the performer to the floor, as his colleague rushed to the stage to try and help him break free.

According to Chinese media, it took six circus staff in Huzhou, China to release the bear's tight grip and usher it back in its cage on Tuesday (13 February).

Much like the spectators who watched in disbelief during the performance, the video soon made its way onto Douyin, China's version of TikTok with users flocking to the comments to have their say.

One user explained: "This little bear is so disturbed. I can only imagine how much abuse it has suffered."

While others called for circuses to end the performances of animals, one person commented: "Cancel animal performances, they are so sad to watch!" while another echoed the same feeling adding: "There should be no animal shows..."

The Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus), which is also known as the white-chested bear originates from Asia and is currently listed as 'vulnerable' by IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The species of bear has become endangered on the back of deforestation and poaching for their body parts, to be used in medicine.

This comes after Safer Human Medicine's plans to house 30,000 monkeys in a complex next to the homes of local residents in Georgia, US has caused outrage amongst those that live there, with one homeowner saying that the city would become 'overrun' if the plans were to go ahead.
