DNA nails female junkie, 37, who battered pensioner to point of death in old folks home
Samantha McDonnell broke into the old folks home in Birmingham in March and battered pensioner so badly that he was left with a brain bleed - and she cut his phone off so he couldn't ask for help
A druggie who broke into sheltered housing and beat an elderly man to the point of death has been slammed in prison for seven years.
Samantha McDonnell, 37, forced her way into an old folks home in Birmingham last month, letting herself into three flats and stole from two pensioners and a support worker.
But during one of the robberies, she was confronted by an 87-year-old man who she demanded money from – she then launched a horrendous attack on him, leaving him with a brain bleed, before stealing his bank card.
And she even unplugged her the man's phone to stop him calling for help.
She fled the scene leaving the victim lying lifeless on the floor.
Neighbours raised the alarm and he was rushed to hospital with severe injuries including a broken nose and a bleed on the brain.
McDonnell was nailed by DNA evidence left in the flat and she was arrested at her flat in Bartley Green the day after the robbery.
Officers seized the stolen items and clothes she was wearing at the time of the attack.
McDonnell was also filmed near the pensioner’s flats by one of the support workers shortly after the robbery and was picked out on an ID parade.
She admitted theft, robbery and burglary and was jailed for seven-and-a-half years at Birmingham Crown Court on April 28.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “While McDonnell is a drug addict and her addiction likely drove her to commit the crimes she did, addiction can be no excuse for violence against a vulnerable, elderly person.
"While he has since been released from hospital, his life has sadly been changed forever and he has had to move to a new home due to not feeling safe.
