Frank Lampard sacked as Everton manager with Toffees heading for relegation
Legendary Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has now been sacked from his second Premier League job after Everton decided the time was right for a change at Goodison Park
Frank Lampard has been sacked by Everton as the Toffees try to turn their wretched season around.
The Toffees board have made the move after 48 hours of discussions following Saturday’s defeat by West Ham. Everton have now won just one game in 14 and are second from bottom of the Premier League.
Lampard has been in charge just less than a year but has managed just 12 wins in 44 games across all competitions. The former Chelsea midfielder did manage to keep the Toffees in the Premier League last season.
But they have failed to build on that and have won just three league games this season and lost 11. Lampard has not been helped by the financial constraints at the club while last season’s top goalscorer Richarlison was sold to Tottenham in the summer.
The Toffees failed to replace the goals from the Brazilian while striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been plagued by injuries. But results simply haven’t been good enough and Lampard is now out of a job.
It looked like Lampard would face the axe after a home defeat by Brighton earlier this month. But he then got the public backing of owner Farhad Moshiri when he called for stability.
However, the Blues have lost three games since, including back-to-back defeats by relegation rivals Southampton and West Ham.
That las led the board to make the move to dismiss him.
Moshiri has now sacked six managers since he invested in the club while Carlo Ancelotti quit to return to Real Madrid. The Iranian billionaire, the board and director of football Kevin Thelwell will now begin the search for Lampard’s successor.
Moshiri and the club’s board have been discussing his future since the defeat by the Hammers at the London Stadium. The club is considering other candidates who could come in and take over.
But there is just over a week to go in the January transfer window so if any new boss is to have a say in signings then their appointment will need to be swift.
Villarreal striker Arnaut Danjuma is set to arrive on loan this week despite the change of manager.
