Mohamed Salah and Arne Slot could both be heading out of Anfield this summer and Liverpool have big decisions to make after a hugely disappointing season so far

Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on his goal and trophy-laden spell at Anfield.

The 33-year-old's exit wasn't unexpected, given his deal was set to run down next season, alongside his outburst against the club's bosses and manager Arne Slot last December, which cast doubt over his future. Without Salah next season, the club's ongoing transformation has now encountered a fresh and substantial obstacle.

That's on top of the uncertainty surrounding Slot's role as manager for the 2026/27 season. Here we look at Xabi Alonso's reported requirements for taking the Dutchman's job amid a potential return to Merseyside and Salah's contract being labelled a "mess". Here's all the latest news from Anfield.

Xabi Alonso demand

Having stayed unemployed since his sacking from Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso is reportedly willing to take on the manager position at Liverpool should an offer be made for his expertise, according to BILD Sport.

However, a potential return to Merseyside for the former Liverpool star wouldn't be driven by the sentimental value of reuniting with the Anfield supporters, but rather the degree of authority he'd be granted regarding squad development.

German media outlets suggest the Spaniard was refused greater involvement in team planning at Madrid prior to accepting the role, and it's a scenario he wouldn't wish to repeat should he replace Slot.

While it's unclear who the Reds will pursue in the summer transfer market, Alonso would undoubtedly welcome the prospect of his former charges Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong wearing the iconic red jersey.

The 44-year-old was their manager at Bayer Leverkusen, where he completed an unprecedented unbeaten domestic double in 2024, winning the club's first ever Bundesliga title and first DFB-Pokal since 1993.

Less than a year into his reported £400,000-a-week deal, 33-year-old Salah has chosen to explore new opportunities.

The choice to offer him fresh terms during his remarkable 2024/25 season while spearheading the Reds' Premier League triumph was criticised by Jason Cundy, reports the Mirror.

The former Chelsea player turned talkSPORT pundit targeted Liverpool's hierarchy and argued the massive contract given to the winger should have been awarded to Trent Alexander-Arnold to prevent his switch to Real Madrid.

"All the Liverpool fans phoning up moaning about Trent, about what happened, they turned down £20m from Real Madrid," Cundy said on the Sports Bar. "They gave Mo Salah a two-year contract on £400,000-a-week, they gave the contract to the wrong player!

"They should have given that money to Trent, in his prime. So he's walked on a free, they've both walked on a free. So they give the money to Trent, and all the Liverpool fans moaning... they've put their eggs in the wrong basket, Liverpool.

"They've ballsed this right up, they should have given Trent, at the peak of his powers, give him what he wanted, sit down, do the deal, do the deal earlier, and let Salah go.

"Now all of a sudden, you find they've gone on a free... wow! I mean, that is a mess... that is an absolute mess."

Liverpool are battling to secure Champions League qualification after dropping out of the title chase, and missing out could mean curtains for Slot, with many observers predicting that a finish of sixth or lower could result in him getting the sack.

The Reds sit fifth, five points behind fourth-place Aston Villa, after recently losing to Brighton & Hove Albion and drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Daily Mail reports Slot's position is not presently under threat. The club are said to be "narrowing down lengthy lists of summer transfer targets" and "approaching" agents, work purportedly done in "consultation" with Slot.
