Manchester United are in a battle to return to European football and are likely to be active in the January transfer window, as Ruben Amorim has hit out at critics of his tactical approach

Manchester United are still smarting from their defeat on Monday night after Ruben Amorim's squad saw their five-match unbeaten run come to an end, failing to score against a 10-man Everton.

An early sending off for Idrissa Gueye following a tussle with team-mate Michael Keane did nothing to aid United's cause. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put the visitors ahead before half-time and David Moyes' side clung on to secure a memorable three points at Old Trafford.

With no European football to contend with, Amorim has several days to ponder where his team faltered. In terms of their aspirations to return to European competition, United currently sit 10th in the table but are only three points shy of a Champions League spot.

The club will be hoping to bounce back this weekend, but they face a challenging journey to Crystal Palace on Sunday. Here's all the latest headlines surrounding Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim has responded to accusations that he is unwilling to alter his tactics, reports the Mirror.

The United manager has frequently been criticised during his tenure for persisting with his favoured back-three formation, with some pundits and fans suggesting that his squad isn't ideally suited to this system. Earlier this season, Amorim declared not even the Pope could persuade him to alter his system.

Yet, the United manager has now acknowledged that he's prepared to adjust his tactics and make changes during matches, pointing to the flexible attack he employed at Sporting CP, which frequently saw Viktor Gyokeres deployed in wide positions.

"We did it against Liverpool, it wasn't with Bryan Mbeumo, it was with Cunha," Amorim told DAZN Portugal. "And it's an option that we have, and nowadays, everyone, I think not only in the English league but in the Portuguese league, in all leagues, there's a great variation in how things are structured.

"We might say it's a 4-4-2, but five minutes later it's a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3. And therefore I'm willing to do anything, contrary to what many people think that I'm too fixated on one thing. I simply start with a basic foundation, but obviously, we can use it in the future."

United are poised to determine whether to loan out a trio of promising youngsters during the January transfer window.

The Daily Mail reports that defender Ayden Heaven will be amongst those being considered, as the 19-year-old has found regular playing time hard to come by this season and now faces heightened competition from a returning Lisandro Martinez.

Summer recruit Diego Leon might be another player heading for a temporary stint away from Old Trafford. The 18-year-old full-back has been included in matchday squads but is yet to make his first team debut and is rumoured to be considering a loan move to Nice.

Sekou Kone, another promising talent, is also tipped for a loan transfer in January. The 19-year-old midfielder hasn't had any involvement with the first team this season.
