The Metropolitan Police said a 36-year-old man with a sword was arrested close to Hainault Tube station in East London this morning (Tuesday, April 30) after several people, including two police officers, were attacked.

A 14-year-old boy has died following the arrest of a sword-wielding man alleged to have stabbed multiple people close to a London Tube station.

Emergency responders were pictured at the scene outside Hainault station in East London this morning (Tuesday, April 30).

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was contacted shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area and multiple people being stabbed.

Police understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers.

Speaking at a press conference near the scene this afternoon, Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said: “You will be aware that a serious incident occurred here at this location this morning. Police and ambulance services were called and deployed to a number of casualties.

“It is with great sadness that I confirm one of those injured in the incident, a 13-year-old boy [police later corrected his age to 14] has died from their injuries.

“He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died a short while after. The child’s family are being supported firstly by my local officers and now with some specialist officers.”

A 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene. Police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the wider community. Police are not looking for more suspects, and the incident is not believed to be terror-related.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said: "This must have been a terrifying incident for those concerned. I know the wider community will be feeling shock and alarm. People will want to know what has happened and will we provide more information as soon as we can."

TfL said: "This station is closed due to a police investigation in the area." Underground tubes travelling through Hainault are on the Central Line, and people were urged to plan alternative routes.

London Ambulance Service: "We were called at 6.54am this morning to an incident near Hainault Underground Station. We sent multiple resources to the scene. Working together with our emergency services partners, we treated five people and took all five to hospital. Our crews have now left the scene."

Police cars were pictured at the scene, and a helicopter appeared circling overhead. Images shared on social media appear to show someone in the area holding a large blade.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on X: "This is a shocking incident. My thoughts are with those affected and their families. I'd like to thank the emergency services for their ongoing response, and pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery shown by police on the scene. Such violence has no place on our streets."

Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North, said on X: "A critical incident has been declared in Hainault. There are station and road closures in place.

"The Police, Ambulance Service and Fire Brigade are responding. One male detained. I would urge people not to speculate until details are confirmed or post footage on social media."
