Men's Champions League club make history by appointing first ever female coach
A Bundesliga club playing Champions League football have become the first German club in history to hire a woman to the coaching staff of their men's team.
A Champions League club have made history by appointing a woman as their new assistant coach.
Bundesliga side Union Berlin have hired former footballer Marie-Louise Eta to work alongside interim head coach Marco Grote following the departure of former manager Urs Fischer this week. The club are rock bottom of both the Bundesliga and their Champions League group, and are winless in 14 matches.
They finished fourth in the league last season - their highest ever placing in the Bundesliga - but a torrid start to the current campaign has left the club in tatters. Eta, 32, worked as Grote’s No.2 for Berlin's U19s team after taking up the role in June.
Previously, she'd worked as manager of Germany's U19s, U15s and U21s women's teams after hanging up her boots in 2018. As a player she played for Hamburg, Werder Bremen, Cleppenburg and Turbine Potsdam, and also made 50 appearances for Germany's various youth teams.
Following her appointment to first team duties at Union Berlin, she will become the first woman in the dugout during a Bundesliga game when her side takes on Augsburg on November 25.
Union Berlin have spent the majority of the 21st Century playing lower league football, but achieved promotion to the Bundesliga for the very first time in 2019. They ended their debut campaign in 11th place, and qualified for European football by finishing seventh the following year.
The season after that they secured a fifth place finish, and went one better last year by making it into the top four. They were subsequently drawn into a Champions League group featuring Real Madrid, Napoli and Braga, and have managed to take just one point from four matches so far.
