Messi becomes most decorated player in history moments after Ronaldo misses out on title
PSG sealed the Ligue 1 title following their 1-1 draw with Strasbourg, with Lionel Messi getting on the scoresheet, shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr side lost out on Saudi Arabia Pro League title
Lionel Messi has become the most decorated player in football history following PSG's Ligue 1 triumph.
The Parisian club sealed their ninth title in 11 years following a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday, with Messi netting his side's goal in the first half, leaving them four points clear of second-placed Lens with a game remaining.
The trophy is the 43rd of the little Argentine's career, bringing him level with former Barcelona team-mate Dani Alves. By contrast, rival Cristiano Ronaldo has just 34 trophies to his name.
The title win caps off a marvellous season for Messi, who dragged his country to World Cup glory in epic style back in December and has netted 21 goals in all competitions for PSG, nearly doubling his tally from the previous campaign.
Messi's triumph came just minutes after Ronaldo's Al-Nassr side failed in their quest to land the Saudi Arabia Pro League following their 1-1 draw with Ettifaq, which left them four points off the top with a game to go.
Fans couldn't help but compare the fortunes of the eternal foes, with many labelling Messi the "undisputed goat".
"Ronaldo loses out on the title the same day Messi becomes the most successful footballer ever! You can't make it up haha," one person tweeted. Another said: "Messi and Ronaldo both ending their seasons in deserving fashion. Messi going out a champion, Ronaldo going out a failure."
A third added: "Messi is the greatest in history, but we already knew that didn't we. Undisputed goat."
Messi, who was booed by PSG ultras earlier this month after he missed training by travelling to Saudi Arabia without the club's permission, is expected to leave the French capital this summer with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. If he does, he's going out a champion … which is more than you can say for Ronaldo.
